In One Of THE most incredible feats in modern history, International superstar Madonna causes more than 1.5 million people to throng Brazil’s Copacabana beach for a free Madonna concert on Saturday. Incredibly, these fans braved the heat in order to see the end of her “Celebration” world tour.
Consequently, the sand and oceanfront boulevard around Rio de Janeiro’s famed beach were overwhelmingly filled for several blocks by a crowd that the city would later estimate to be approximately 1.6 million.
Many had been there for hours, some even days, just to get a good spot. In addition, wealthier fans anchored in dozens of boats near the beach as onlookers crowded beachfront apartments.
Firefighters dutifully sprayed water before the concert, when temperatures exceeded 86 degrees Fahrenheit, in order to cool excited fans who had gathered near the pop queen’s stage. Thankfully, drinking water was also distributed for free. Temperatures hovered around 81 F during the late night show.
